Fabulous Friday: Cocktail Hour

Aoife, Cambridge

I spent a delightful afternoon at my allotment last Saturday enjoying the Autumn sunshine, followed by an evening making rosehip syrup. By Sunday afternoon the rain had reached as far as Cambridge and I retreated to my kitchen to perfect my chocolate cake recipe. A serious slump mid-way through my baking marathon left me in dire need of a reviving beverage. The sensible choice would have been a cup of tea. However, my beautiful bottle of rosehip syrup spoke to me. "I'm full of vitamin C" it said "I'm sure I would go beautifully with some rhubarb vodka". Well, the syrup certainly knew what it was talking about. With some freshly squeezed pink grapefruit juice to add a little acidity it was but the work of a moment to produce this reviving cocktail. I enjoyed it while surveying my rain soaked balcony.

Compared to my usual horse tranquiliser strength cocktails this one is quite afternoon friendly. Just enough alcohol to pep you up and surely all that vitamin C has got to be good for you.

rainy day reviver (serves one)

40mL rhubarb vodka
20mL rosehip syrup
20mL freshly squeezed pink grapefruit juice

Combine all the ingredients in a cocktail shaker with plenty of ice. Shake until cold and serve in the glass of your choice. Garnish with whatever comes to hand; I used the last of my alpine strawberries (planted by my lovely sister - Happy Birthday Meadhbh!).
