Fabulous Friday: Cocktail Hour

Aoife, Cambridge

I've been sifting through the layers of my cocktail memories again. I recently found myself dreaming of Edinburgh (it must have been all the wind and rain we've been having) and my first experience of infusing drinks and flavoured vodkas. Some classy experiments involving wine gums and White Lightening sprang to mind first but there are slightly more glamorous memories in there too. Myself and the girls spent a lot of time hanging out in Bar Kohl drinking their flavoured vodkas and flirting with the bouncers. The kola kube flavour, served as a long vodka, was a big favourite.

So there I was on a miserable Sunday, with some brand new kilner jars and more vodka than is sensible for an Irish girl to be alone with, I couldn't resist having a go. As you can see from my extensive notes on the jar I had to increase the concentration of kola Kubes considerably before the flavour came through. This is not particularly glamorous or elegant. This is trashy and fun. Extra madness guaranteed from all those colours and flavours. Perfect for a night with my crazy girls.

kola kube long vodka (makes one)

60mL kola kube vodka (25 kola kubes allowed to dissolve in 500mL vodka)
2-3 drops angostura bitters

lots of ice
1 large lime wedge
crushed kola kubes to garnish glass

Add the kola kubes to the vodka in a sterilised jar. Allow to sit for a couple of hours/overnight to dissolve fully. Crush approx 3 kola cubes (seal in a sandwich bag and bash with a rolling pin). Run the edge of the lime around the rim of the glass and dip the glass in the kola kubes. Add plenty of ice to the glass, followed by the vodka and the bitters. Squeeze the juice from the lime wedge and add to the glass. Top with lemonade (or soda water or tonic water). Give it a good stir and add your straws.
