Fabulous Friday: (Emergency) Cocktail Hour

Aoife, Cambridge

A genuine, full-on, break glass and sound-the-alarm style cocktail emergency occurred last week. The full force of a wave of overwhelmed-ness hit me and threatened to pull me under. I was only coaxed out of taking to the bed by repeated promises of gin.

As seems to be the case all to regularly around here, this was no time for fancy cocktail making. Some serious gin, picked up on recent visit to the Adnam's distillery was the base. I grabbed the first bottles of bitters I could see, rhubarb and lemon. It sounded like a sensible combination and it turned out to be quite delicious. A solitary bottle of Fevertree tonic was discovered lurking at the back of the cupboard. Ice plus a slice of a lemon that was only partly moldy and the job was done. Below you can see the resulting emergency cocktail complete with my tense "claw-finger". This gin was medically necessary.

This terrible tale is good revision case study for cocktail emergencies:
  1. Keep the cupboards stocked (mini-tonic bottles or cans are a lifesaver)
  2. Bitters perfectly jazz-up your gin and tonic
  3. Gin makes everything better
